The last time we went to the theater, I spent the first twenty minutes trying to remember where we parked. Somewhere in the second act, Walt leaned over and asked if I had turned the heat down before we left, and I had not. We watched the rest of the movie with one eye on the clock and the other on the exit sign. On the drive home, we both said the same thing at the same time: we could have watched this in bed.

That same week, the first week of February, we started our Thursday date nights and bought the TMY Native 1080P Mini Portable Projector. About nine months and three dozen Thursdays later, it is one of the few things we actually still use. Here are the ten reasons it beats going to the theater, in the order we discovered them.

Our Bedroom Becomes a Theater in About Ten Minutes

The TMY comes with an 80-inch foldable screen, runs from the remote, and takes a streaming stick in the HDMI port. We hung the screen, plugged in the stick, and have not looked back.

The Commute Is Twelve Steps

From the kitchen table to the loveseat at the foot of our bed, it is twelve steps, and every one of them is in my own house. No parking garage, no escalator, no line at the ticket counter, no trying to remember which level we parked on. Walt can stay in his work clothes or change into sweatpants, and nobody cares. By the time a real theater would have us settled into our seats for the previews, we are already halfway through the movie on the TMY.

You Can Pause It

This is the one thing theaters cannot fix. When the popcorn needs refilling, when one of us needs a minute, when Walt misses a line because he sneezed at the wrong moment, we hit pause. The TMY runs from the remote, and the streaming stick in the HDMI port makes the whole thing behave like a very big tablet. Nobody shushes us, and nobody misses the twist because of a bathroom break.

The Snacks Are Better and the Floor Isn't Sticky

Theater popcorn is fine, but it is not 'chocolate fondue for dessert' fine. On projector nights, we bring whatever we want from the kitchen, and nobody charges us for it. I can eat in my socks without wondering what I am stepping on, and Walt can have seconds without a fifteen-minute trip to the concession stand. That alone is worth the switch.

4

You Can Talk During the Movie

I know the rules of the theater, and I have followed them for forty years. But half the fun of a date night movie is the commentary. At home, with the projector running, Walt can point out the town where they filmed it, and I can ask questions without a stranger sighing behind us. The movie becomes something we watch together, not just side by side in the dark.

The Seat Is Better

Our loveseat is not stadium seating, but it is ours, and it faces an 80-inch screen. There is a blanket that lives on the back of it, a pillow that knows the shape of my neck, and no armrest contest with a stranger. For two people in their late fifties, that beats a sticky floor, a seat that does not quite recline, and the faint hope that the person behind us stops kicking the back of our chair.

Nobody Has to Drive Home

Walt still works full time, so a 9:30 show means he is wired until midnight. With the projector, the drive home is the hallway. He can have his late coffee, I can fall asleep during the credits, and we both wake up in our own bed. That is a luxury no theater can match.

The Screen Is 80 Inches and It Came in the Box

The TMY includes an 80-inch foldable screen. We hang it on the wall across from the loveseat, and it turns our bedroom into a theater. For a projector this small, that felt like the whole deal. We did not have to buy a screen, a stand, or a mount, because the projector also works on a table, a tripod, the wall, or the ceiling. We keep ours on the dresser.

8

It Sets Up in Minutes

The remote controls the projector, the streaming stick slides into the HDMI port, and the screen hangs on the wall. From "let's watch a movie" to the opening credits takes about ten minutes, and that includes Walt finding his glasses. The picture is native 1080p, so it is sharp and clear, and the 10000:1 contrast ratio makes the dark scenes look like a real theater.

9

You Watch What You Want, Not What's Playing

The theater offers three showtimes and one movie. We have the whole catalog on the projector. On nights when we cannot agree, we pick something neither of us has seen, and if it is a dud, we switch. No sunk cost, no sitting through the second hour out of politeness. Some of our best projector nights have been movies we would never have bought tickets for, and that is exactly the point.

It Makes a Plain Thursday Feel Like an Event

This is the reason I would keep the projector even if the other nine disappeared. The lights go off, the screen comes down, the phones stay in the kitchen drawer, and suddenly it is not just another Thursday. We have had about three dozen Thursdays since February, and the projector nights are the ones we still talk about at breakfast. The TMY did not fix anything, because nothing was broken. It just gave us a way to sit close, look at the same screen, and laugh at the same joke.

What I'd Skip

I will be honest with you. I would skip the projector on a bright afternoon, when the sun pours through the bedroom windows and the picture goes soft. It is 300 lumens, which is plenty for a dim room and not enough to fight daylight, and it will never be as bright as the 55-inch TV in the living room. The built-in speaker is thin, too, so we plug in a small speaker we already had, either through Bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack. We also do not use it for sports or for anything we want to glance at while moving around the house. It is a date night tool, not a replacement for the TV. If you want a projector for a sunny family room, skip this one and look for something brighter. If you want a way to make one night a week feel special, keep reading.

About three dozen Thursdays in, the nights we watch a movie on that 80-inch screen are still the ones we talk about at breakfast.
